What is RENEW?

RENEW (Reinforcing the European Network on Energies and reneWables) is a forward-looking, constructive, citizen-oriented, inclusive, equality-promoting project which wants to design a new narrative for Europe where citizens are the main actors and authors of the future of the Union. The new approach proposed by RENEW – a bottom-up, open, democratic and inclusive one - represents a determinant factor in the construction of a more inclusive and respectful Union, where citizens cherish their heritage, diversity and identity and act as pieces of a big puzzle – that is the European community. Youth is mostly valued within this project; the action foresees to encourage the participation of young people so to give them the tools that enable them to consciously and actively take part to decision-making processes and to the civic life of their communities. While dealing with renewable energies and empowering citizens on their use - one of the prerogatives of the current European policies and CERV programme - RENEW represents an opportunity to focus on EU priorities more broadly, since the project action will improve local awareness about the rights coming with the European citizenship and will allow the sharing of best practices on the richness of diversity and gender equality across Europe.

The CERV programme in a nutshell

The Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme was launched in 2021 and will run for seven years until 2027. It was created along with the 2021-2027 Justice programme under the Justice, Rights and Values Fund.

The CERV programme seeks to support and develop open, rights-based, democratic, equal and inclusive societies based on the rule of law. That includes a vibrant and empowered civil society, encouraging people's democratic, civic and social participation and cultivating the rich diversity of European society, based on our common values, history and memory.

The CERV programme has four pillars:

  1. Equality, Rights and Gender Equality - promoting rights, non-discrimination, equality (including gender equality), and advancing gender and non-discrimination mainstreaming
  2. Citizens' engagement and participation - promoting citizens engagement and participation in the democratic life of the Union, exchanges between citizens of different Member States, and raising awareness of the common European history
  3. Daphne - fight violence, including gender-based violence and violence against children
  4. Union values - protect and promote Union values

Civil society organisations active at local, regional, national and transnational level, as well as other stakeholders, can apply to receive CERV funding for initiatives aimed at citizens' engagement, equality for all and the protection and promotion of rights and EU values.

RENEW: Priorities

RENEWfocuses on the following programme priorities:

- Trigger the intercultural and constructive dialogue by giving to different European peoples the possibility to exchange opinions and best practices during project activities;

- Contribute to a better future of the Union, for a more respectful, dynamic, inclusive Europe by raising awareness of the cultural heritage of the Union and of the rights and benefits deriving from the European citizenship, promoting equality and democracy and fighting discrimination and gender divide;

- Create a cohesive European community and society based on solidarity and mutual help, to tackle societal challenges more efficiently and fight national biases with transnational and productive dialogue and discussions of common solutions of common issues;

- Foster the European integration process based on EU values by raising awareness of the main historical events that have built the European culture;

- Giving citizens the opportunity to shape the Europe they want by giving them space to talk and debate about current themes and current challenges faced by Europe, such as Euroscepticism; this will strengthen and unite the social tissue of Europe;

- Consult citizen communities and gather their recommendations to strengthen their sense of ownership of the European project, taking into account the Citizenship Report 2020;

- Promote gender mainstreaming and the inclusion of minorities by arranging gender-focused and inclusive activities based on a gender analysis, using neutral and gender-sensitive language and disaggregating data by sex and age, inviting everyone to participate, aligning with the Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 and the EU Roma strategic framework on equality, inclusion and participation.

A sustainable future for all

RENEW counts on a bottom-up and democratic approach, which allows the project action to be extended to everybody according to high quality standards and free access to all, so that also people having socio-economic difficulties or coming from difficult situations, are involved and listened to. The wide target group of the project is made up of locals, representatives, administrators, volunteers, students, minorities and people with fewer opportunities. RENEW believes in youth as starters of the engine of the shift to a better Europe, thus it particularly focuses on encouraging the involvement of young people, so to build awareness among them of the benefits and the importance of their conscious and active participation in the civic life of societies, and of the enrichment that every voice can bring.
